This week we're featured in the Calgary Herald as Startup of the Week, with a Q&A between Arkit founders Chris Kam and Vincent Lam and Boast Capital's Lloyed Lobo. Although we've been established since 2011, we continue to embrace the spirit of a startup in our drive to bring new technology and ideas to the Oil & Gas industry.
Q: How did you come up with the idea for your startup? Was there an “ah-ha” moment?
The idea started while Chris was working as an environmental consultant for the Oil & Gas industry. He was managing large-scale projects and quickly realized how inefficient the workflows were, both within his organization and at other companies. Labour-intensive processes with paper records and maps, information getting lost in emails between companies, and endless spreadsheets needing to be updated manually. The “ah-ha” moment came when a colleague verbalized this pain. “Someone needs to make some software to standardize all this across the industry. Something actually easy to use.”
Q: What has been the biggest challenge so far? What have you done to solve it?
Influencing change has been one of the bigger challenges we faced. People in Oil & Gas are so used to their way of doing things, including relying on cumbersome software, hand-maintained spreadsheets and even pen and paper to manage increasingly complex information. While change can be scary, the potential benefits are huge. Investing time in working with our early adopters to validate the performance and benefit of Arkit has helped us overcome this. Since all our clients have found great value, we feel more confident than ever when talking to potentially reluctant adopters. When you have a car, why still ride the horse?
